Hey guys
Last week was another busy one for me. I was down in Southampton recording an edition of 360 Sessions for Channel 4. We went to a series of different locations that were important to me growing up; my favourite park where I used to play football on the cricket pitch and cause the groundsman a lot of grief, and the ferry port, which is not far from the studio where I recorded my first album. Then we went to Southampton Solent University, where I got an honorary degree for contribution to music. I saw some of the students working in the recording studio I opened, which was amazing – 15 Macs with keyboards and headphones where people can lay down tracks, there was nothing like that at all when I was that age. I also did an acoustic performance of four songs in the university’s TV Theatre – Fill Me In plus three tracks from the new album, One More Lie (Standing In The Shadows), Mercy Mercy Me and Dock Of The Bay. We also filmed at the dentist where I still go to for check-ups, my cousin is my dentist so it’s a good opportunity to catch up! Although I do get a lot of, ‘Craig, have you been flossing regularly…?’
We also filmed a Special for T4, which included a special performance of one of my favourite tracks off the new album, ‘I Wonder Why’. We filmed it at my house and Kwame came down, should be a cool piece. I’ve also just finished a shoot and interview for Fabulous magazine at my house about ‘Spaces’, which was a fun one to do.
And of course there was the Brits on Tuesday. I actually missed the red carpet because it took two hours to get from my house in Hampstead to Earls Court!! That’s never, ever happened before, the roads just seemed to be blocked! It actually turned out to be in our favour, because while I didn’t get to see as much of the show as everyone else, I got to spend some quality time with radio DJs, TV crews etc. which normally you can’t do because the red carpet is so hectic.
Highlights for me were Jay Z and Alicia Keys’ duet, and I thought Cheryl Cole’s performance was really good too. N-Dubz were on our table, I’ve only met them in passing before, they were nice, had a cool energy. I decided to skip the after-parties and go home to sleep because I was travelling to Southampton to record 360 Sessions the following day. I could have rocked out, got on the tequila and champagne, gone to bed at 4.30, but then I’d have been singing at 60% of my capacity the following day, and when I sat back and watched it I’d have been thinking, ‘Craig you sound terrible’. You learn that the rock and roll lifestyle isn’t always the best way forward…
I’ve been doing my thank-yous for the album sleeve too. You start off quite generic and then go into details for each person, and come up with more and more people you want to include, and before you know it you’re getting down to the dog and the cat and the guy who comes to fix the TV! So I’m going to have to scale that back a bit.
Hope everyone had a top weekend!
Peace
Craig
